Grenache Noir: the solar soul of Roussillon

Grenache Noir is one of the flagship grape varieties of Roussillon, bringing power, warmth and roundness to the wines of this sun-drenched region. Used both for red wines and for Vins Doux Naturels, it perfectly embodies the Mediterranean terroir. Immerse yourself in the universe of this generous grape, rich in history and deeply rooted in Catalan wine culture.

Origin and history of Grenache Noir

Originally from Spain, Grenache Noir – or Garnacha – finds its earliest traces in the region of Aragon. However, the oldest Spanish ampelographic literature mentions it in Catalonia, highlighting the historical importance of this territory in its spread.

Its presence can already be found in the Middle Ages in the writings of the Kingdom of Aragon, which then extended into Catalan lands. As early as the 8th century, the monks of the Abbey of Saint-André de Sorède, in the Albères, submitted a request to Pepin the Short for wines produced on the maritime slopes to be recognized under the appellation Garnatxa d’Empordà. This shows how deeply this grape is rooted in the cross-border wine identity between Northern and Southern Catalonia.

It is in Roussillon that Grenache Noir truly flourished, becoming the cornerstone of major local appellations such as Collioure, Banyuls or Maury. The region’s hot, dry and windy climate, combined with diverse soils, allowed for a remarkable genetic diversification of the grape. Today, we find its main variants: Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris, Grenache Blanc, and Lledoner Pelut, with its slightly hairy leaves (source: Pierre Torres, historian-oenologist).

Characteristics of Grenache Noir

Grenache Noir is a grape variety with late ripening, perfectly adapted to hot climates and increasingly frequent droughts in the Mediterranean. Its natural vigor and ability to withstand wind make it a precious ally for the winegrowers of Roussillon.

On the palate, it unfolds generous aromas of ripe black fruits (cherry, blackberry), accompanied by notes of garrigue, sweet spices and sometimes licorice. Its high tannic potential makes it an ideal base for structured red wines, built for aging, capable of developing evolved aromas of leather, tobacco or dried fruits over the years.

The different expressions of Grenache Noir

In Roussillon, Grenache Noir is expressed in several forms:

  • Red wines: often blended with Syrah or Carignan, they produce powerful, full-bodied and fruity wines.

  • Rosé wines: rarer, they offer beautiful freshness and floral aromas.

  • Vins Doux Naturels (VDN): such as Banyuls or Maury, where Grenache Noir expresses all its richness with notes of candied fruit, fig, cocoa or spices.

A grape adapted to organic viticulture

Grenache Noir is also an ally of sustainable viticulture. Its low sensitivity to diseases allows it to thrive without heavy treatments, making it a preferred choice for organic winegrowers.

In the context of climate change, its resistance to drought makes it particularly relevant. Many estates in Roussillon now place Grenache Noir at the heart of their agroecological approach, combining traditional know-how with sustainable innovations.

By tasting a wine made from organically grown Grenache Noir, you support environmentally friendly viticulture while discovering a rare and precious aromatic authenticity.

Where to taste Grenache Noir in Roussillon?

On the steep vineyards of the Côte Vermeille, on the schist terraces of Banyuls, in the agroecosystems of the Aspres or in the heights of Maury, Grenache Noir reigns supreme. In each place, it expresses a unique character, the fruit of the dialogue between grape, soil and climate.

Many estates now open their doors to wine tourism, offering tours, tastings, and sometimes even walks through the vineyards, in discovery of this mythical grape variety.
