In Tautavel, the village of the Tautavel Man, Domaine Bonzoms has cultivated vines from father to son since 1827. This guided 10 km wine hike circles the village through vineyards, garrigue and the surrounding limestone hills, before a tasting of the estate's organic wines.
Domaine Bonzoms, winegrowers in Tautavel since 1827
A family estate passed down from generation to generation, Domaine Bonzoms has been certified organic since 2012 and holds the Haute Valeur Environnementale label. Its vines grow on the clay-limestone soils of Tautavel, in the heart of Côtes du Roussillon Villages. Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Macabeu and Muscat petits grains produce wines that express this dry, luminous terroir. The estate's historic cellar, in the heart of the village, bears witness to two centuries of tradition.
The route: a 10 km loop around Tautavel
The loop starts in the village and returns there, with about 2 h 30 of walking. It climbs from the valley floor, at around 95 m above sea level, to nearly 490 m on the heights surrounding Tautavel: allow for about 500 m of positive elevation gain, with several sustained climbs. You cross the vineyards of the Côtes du Roussillon Villages Tautavel cru, then the garrigue, at the foot of the limestone cliffs that close off the landscape.
Tautavel, cradle of the Tautavel Man
Tautavel is known worldwide for the Caune de l'Arago, the cave where the remains of the Tautavel Man, around 450,000 years old, were discovered. The village's prehistory museum traces this history: a visit to plan before or after the hike. Tautavel also gives its name to one of the Côtes du Roussillon Villages crus, which you will taste during the tasting.
Practical info
The hike is led by a guide, for groups of 2 to 12 people. The level is intermediate: good physical fitness is required for the climbs. Departure and arrival are at the estate, and the exact meeting point is sent to you after booking.
When to do this hike?
Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons: mild temperatures, garrigue in bloom in spring, vines in harvest colours in autumn. The route is exposed and offers little shade: in summer, it is better to set off early in the morning with at least 1.5 litres of water per person.
The walk ends with a tasting of the estate's wines and a moment of exchange with the Bonzoms family about their terroir and history.

Recommendations

Passionate about the landscapes of Roussillon and the connections between nature and viticulture, I accompany you on wine hikes designed as genuine immersive experiences, to help you disconnect and reconnect. Between hiking, local culture, and visits to wine estates, I design each itinerary to offer a balance between the pleasure of walking, discovering the terroir, and moments of sharing.
