In Banyuls-sur-Mer, on the Côte Vermeille, Domaine de la Casa Blanca - Nénu farms old vines on schist terraces that tumble down to the Mediterranean. This guided 8.7 km wine hike climbs from the vineyard to the Coll dels Gascons, the high point of the route at 387 m, before heading back down to the estate for a wine tasting.
Domaine de la Casa Blanca - Nénu, schist terraces facing the sea
Founded in 1870, the family estate covers about 8 hectares of hand-built schist terraces. No synthetic products are used: grazing, manual work and the winch guide every task in the vineyard. In the cellar, wines are made with indigenous yeasts and no oenological inputs, apart from a small amount of sulphur. Grenache noir, gris and blanc, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Syrah make honest natural wines in the Collioure and Banyuls appellations.
The route: from the vines to the Coll dels Gascons
The loop of about 8.7 km takes 2 hours 30. It leaves the estate, climbs through terraced vines and garrigue, then reaches the Coll dels Gascons at 387 m before returning to the start. The elevation gain is about 400 m: the climb is steady and not technical, but you should be used to walking two to three hours. The guide stays with the group throughout the loop.
The Coll dels Gascons, a balcony over Banyuls and the Mediterranean
This pass overlooks the Banyuls vineyards and opens a wide view over the bay, the village and the sea. It is a well-known spot for walkers on the Côte Vermeille, on the foothills of the Albères, overlooked higher up by the Madeloc tower. From up there, you understand why winegrowers had to build terraces on these slopes, stone by stone.
Practical information
The hike is led by a guide, for groups of 2 to 12 people. It starts and ends at the estate, and the exact meeting point is sent to you after booking. Departures are on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, timed to finish just before the estate's own visit.
When to do this hike
Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons: mild temperatures, vines in full growth or in harvest colours. In summer, choose the morning departure, as the route has little shade: bring water and a hat.
The walk ends at the estate with a tasting of its natural wines and a chat with the winegrowers about their schist terroir.
