A winery visit usually lasts 1 to 2 hours: a walk through the vines and the cellar, an explanation of the winemaker's work, then a guided tasting of 3 to 6 wines. Expect €10 to €25 per person depending on the estate and the range tasted; the tasting is often free or deducted when you buy bottles.
The Roussillon vineyard is split into four main terroirs, all within an hour of Perpignan.
Tautavel, Estagel, Latour-de-France, Vingrau: schist soils and natural sweet wines, 30 min north of Perpignan.
Collioure, Banyuls-sur-Mer, Port-Vendres: terraced vines plunging into the Mediterranean.
Thuir, Castelnou, Tresserre: scrubland, olive trees and perched villages on the edge of Perpignan.
Elne, Ille-sur-Têt: family estates, muscats and full-bodied reds from the alluvial plain.

Yes, booking is strongly recommended: most estates are small family businesses and the winemaker welcomes you personally. Book online a few days ahead, and more in summer and during the harvest (September).
The richest areas are the Agly Valley (Tautavel, Estagel, Latour-de-France, Vingrau), the Côte Vermeille (Collioure, Banyuls-sur-Mer, Port-Vendres), the Aspres (Thuir, Castelnou, Tresserre) and the Roussillon plain (Elne, Ille-sur-Têt). Use the commune filter above to see the estates in each area.
Most estates welcome families: children join the walk through the vines and the cellar, and are offered grape juice or cordials during the tasting. Check the minimum age shown on each experience listing.
The department produces the Côtes du Roussillon and Côtes du Roussillon Villages AOCs (dry reds and whites), Collioure, as well as the emblematic natural sweet wines: Banyuls, Maury, Rivesaltes and Muscat de Rivesaltes. The dominant grape varieties are grenache, carignan, syrah, macabeu and muscat à petits grains.
